ARTIST STATEMENT:

Before I was born, my father offered to abort me. On the day I was born, my mother was told not to look at me. And after I was born, I was given away to strangers who adopted, loved and raised me. So, from the beginning of my life, the pattern was established. Discard followed by redemption.

In my “Forsaken Articles” drawing series, I am compelled to follow this theme. Objects discarded by the sea, by humans, by mother nature, are pulled out of context and presented solitaire - emphasizing their fragility, vulnerability, and individual beauty. These objects are meant to be examined. Noticed. And thereby redeemed.

In creating my drawings, I utilize a common ball-point pen. The type of pen used to sign in at the doctors office, or to make a quick inventory at work. This ordinary pen has been employed here to create delicate strands of sea grass, a contorted and twisted paper lunch bag, and a cluster of intricate, imploding ferns. The pen itself has found a kind of redemption.
